Optic Nerve donates 300 pairs of sunglasses towards a free eye exam project in Hawaii

This project provided free eye exams to the residents of the largest public housing project in
Hawaii. These residents are almost all recently-arrived immigrants
from Micronesia, Samoa, and the Philippines and are desperately poor.

"I wanted to thank you for your donation of sunglasses. We recently
held our eye screenings for the residents of Kuhio Park Terrace,
Hawaii's largest public housing project. It was a great success,
with over 300 free eye exams performed. Many of the people who
visited us had never seen an eye doctor and we were able to plug
them into the eyecare network.
Mountain Shades sunglasses were a big hit! We gave a free pair to
every participant and they were a huge draw. Thank you so much for
your generosity!"

Lumber Jack race update/by ON MTB Team Rider http://ping.fm/SAGOs

Lumberjack 100 race report by Danielle Musto

The Lumberjack 100 (race # 3 in the National Ultra Endurance Series) took place this past weekend in Wellston, Michigan. The race had a 3-lap format, and consisted of a lot of short, steep climbs and tight singletrack that snaked through the Manistee National Forest.

I was a little worried going into the race as I had the flu the whole week before. Luckily I recovered in time to race as I had a brand new Salsa Selma to test out. The lumberjack course is a good course to race with only one gear and I felt pretty confident that I could race in the women's open class and still make the podium.

My start was less then ideal, as we had to ride on a completely flat paved road for 1.5 miles. There were a lot of people flying past me in their big rings! However, once we hit the dirt I was able to start picking people off and continued to do so for the rest of the race.

I couldn't have asked for a better bike to race on then my Selma. The bike was extremely responsive and a great climber. I equipped my Stan's wheelset with Kenda Small Block Eights. It was the perfect set-up for the sandy course as I was able to corner without ever sliding out.

I crossed the finish line in 3rd place with a time of 8:29, only 9 minutes behind 1st place. All 3 of my laps were very consistent and were within 30 seconds of each other.

I'll be racing my Dos Niner in Oregon next for the Cascade Creampuff! This course has a ton of climbing, so it's back to gears for me!

Optic Nerve Donates 450 Pairs of Sunglasses to Big City Mountaineers

http://www.snewsnet.com/cgi-bin/snews/18204.html

Denver, Colo. – Optic Nerve, manufacturer of sports sunglasses, has donated 450 pairs of sunglasses to Big City Mountaineers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to enhance the lives of under-resourced urban teens through transformative outdoor experiences. The donation, more than $15,000 in retail value, is enough to provide sunglasses to each teen on BCM’s projected 40 week long wilderness expeditions in 2010, and give sunglasses to 150 of BCM’s top fundraisers.

This summer, Big City Mountaineers will deliver 40 wilderness expeditions in California, Colorado, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and the Pacific Northwest, providing profound outdoor experiences to teens from the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Colorado Springs, Minneapolis and Chicago.

"We at Optic Nerve are proud to continue our support of Big City Mountaineers and their mission to enhance the lives of under-resourced teens," said Bill Cotton, President of Mountain Shades and Optic Nerve. "Our company is based around our love of the outdoors and the enrichment it provides to our lives. We feel it is our obligation to help share that experience with those with fewer opportunities."

About Optic Nerve
Based in Colorado’s mountain playground, Optic Nerve and Mountain Shades have been making performance-driven, price-conscious eyewear for over 25 years. Optic Nerve is Colorado to the core and has tested product in and out of rivers, lakes, mountains, plains, forest and more. To meet all of their adventure needs, the company continually finds ways to blend style and technology to deliver durable and comfortable eyewear with high-end performance and a lifetime guarantee, allowing consumers to spend their money on other gear besides their sunglasses. All styles have the same 100 percent UVA and UVB protection; lightweight, durable construction; and fashion-conscious styling found in more expensive brands, at a fraction of the price. For more information, visit nerveusa.com.

About Big City Mountaineers
BCM is one of the largest nonprofits in the country devoted to working exclusively with under-resourced teens by using the outdoors as a transformational element in their lives. BCM runs its recreational mentoring program in selected major urban centers throughout the country, with its largest program areas in Denver and San Francisco. Learn more at bigcitymountaineers.org.
